Sympathy Quotes

Kundan Pandey
It is very tough to gather your thoughts while expressing condolences to someone. In case we lose someone very close to us, more than the company of near and dear ones, sympathy quotes help give peace to the mind, and help us lessen our sorrow.
As said by Shakespeare, "Words are poor comforters". Yet, words are all that we have after someone, an integral part of our life, whose smile and face we were habitual to, leaves us in utter despair at the stroke of one tragic incident. No human power, however, is strong enough to avert death and dying. Alas!
Acceptance of the fact that our loved one is not with us in the physical form, is the only option left for us. Since death is a natural end, or rather a new beginning of life, all we can do is pray for the departed soul.
Sympathy sayings help us express our deepest love and gratitude for the departed person. They give us strength and wisdom to accept the inevitable. The quotes mentioned further have been compiled from various sources.

Quotes from the Bible

"The Lord is my rock,
and my fortress, and my deliverer;
my God, my strength, in whom I take refuge;
my shield, and the horn of my salvation,
and my high tower."
― Psalm 18:2
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me..."
― Psalm 23
"And He has said to me,
'My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness'
Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses,
so that the power of Christ may dwell in me."
― 2 Corinthians 12:9
"And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
― John 6:39-40

Quotes for Loss of a Child

"Ye have lost a child ― nay, she is not lost to you, who is found to Christ; she is not sent away, but only sent before; like unto a star, which going out of our sight, doth not die and vanish, but shineth in another hemisphere."
― Samuel Rutherford
"For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity."
― William Penn

"The death of a baby is like a stone cast into the stillness of a quiet pool; the concentric ripples of despair sweep out in all directions, affecting many, many people."
― De Frain
"It is the will of God and Nature that these mortal bodies be laid aside, when the soul is to enter into real life; 'tis rather an embrio state, a preparation for living; a man is not completely born until he be dead: Why then should we grieve that a new child is born among the immortals?"
― Benjamin Franklin
"There is a sacredness in tears.
They are not the mark of weakness,
but of power.
They speak more eloquently
than 10,000 tongues.
They are the messengers
of overwhelming grief,
of deep contrition,
and of unspeakable love."
― Washington Irving

Quotes for Loss of Father

"Any man can be a Father, but it takes someone special to be a dad."
― Anne Geddes
"He who is taught to live upon little owes more to his father's wisdom than he who has a great deal left him does to his father's care."
― William Penn
"I watched a small man with thick calluses on both hands work fifteen and sixteen hours a day. I saw him once literally bleed from the bottoms of his feet, a man who came here uneducated, alone, unable to speak the language, who taught me all I need to know about faith and hard work by the simple eloquence of his example."
― Mario Cuomo
"Those we love don't go away, They walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, dtill loved, still missed and very dear... Wishing you hope in the midst of sorrow, comfort in the midst of pain."
― Anonymous
"One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters."
― George Herbert

Quotes for a Friend

"I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought, and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love."
― Leo Buscaglia
"With what a deep devotedness of woe
I wept thy absence ― o'er and o'er again
Thinking of thee, still thee, till thought grew pain,
And memory, like a drop that, night and day,
Falls cold and ceaseless, wore my heart away!"
― Thomas Moore
"For precious friends hid in death's dateless night."
― William Shakespeare
"When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth, you are weeping for that which has been your delight."
― Kahlil Gibran
These should help in times of grief. In such sorrowful times, all we can do is to trust the Almighty, and pray to him to "grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change; the courage to change the things we can; and the wisdom to know the difference".
